EasyJet plane in emergency landing

A burning smell on an easyJet plane flying from London to the Italian city of Bologna prompted the aircraft to make an emergency landing at the airport today, airport authorities said.

The plane was evacuated immediately and no one was injured.

Airport spokeswoman Annarita Benassi said fire officials were checking the plane, but there were indications the smell might have been caused by an electric oven overheating.

The easyJet Airbus with 119 passengers and six crew had left Stansted airport and was 10 minutes away from landing in Bologna at about 1400BST when the smell of something burning prompted the pilot to report possible trouble, triggering emergency procedures at the airport, Benassi said.

However, firefighters did not find a fire or even smoke on board. The airport was not closed, and only a few flights suffered minor delays, Benassi said.

“Given what’s happened in the last few days we’re being very careful,” Benassi said. “In reality, it was a trifle.”
