The Taoiseach says he hopes the Taliban regime will be toppled as a result of the US led strikes last night.

Mr Ahern also praised the US for their "controlled and responsible" attack on Afghanistan.

He said the US and the European allies are aware of the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and wanted to avoid killing innocent citizens.

Mr Ahern stated that this would be the focus of Ireland's control of the United Nations Security Council.

He also confirmed that Irish air space was not used during last night's attack.
