A new national network will try combat carbon dioxide emissions and promote energy efficiency in Ireland.

The average Irish home spends €1300 per annum on fuel and electricity and is responsible for nine tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, Sustainable Energy Ireland has said.

The figures were revealed as SEI launches a new national network to combat CO2 emissions and promote energy efficient practices in buildings.

The Sustainable Energy in Buildings Network (“SEBNet”) will bring together the main manufacturers and suppliers of energy efficiency products for the home building and home improvement markets in Ireland.

The focus of the network is on growing the market for energy efficient products and systems by developing joint promotional and training initiatives.

Participation by more than 20 major suppliers who provide over 50% of the market for such products has been secured by SEI.

Sustainable Energy Ireland was established in May 2002 as a statutory authority charged with promoting and assisting the development of a sustainable national energy economy.

SEI is funded by the Irish Government under the National Development Plan 2000-2006 with programmes part-financed by the European Union.
