Man dies in garda custody in Tralee

A garda investigation is underway following the death of a 42-year-old Polish national who was arrested in Co Kerry early this morning.

A garda investigation is underway following the death of a 42-year-old Polish national who was arrested in Co Kerry early this morning.

The man was detained at around 4am in Tralee by officers investigating a report of a sexual assault.

The man was arrested and brought to Tralee garda station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Shortly before 2pm today, he was found unconscious in a cell. A doctor was called and the man was brought to Tralee General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The scene has been preserved and the State Pathologist and the Garda Ombudsman have both been notified.

A Superintendent from outside the Kerry Division has been appointed by the Garda Commissioner to investigate the incident.
