Gardaí tonight launched a murder investigation after the body of a woman was found in an unoccupied house.
The discovery was made at around 9pm yesterday in Great Waters Street, Longford Town.
A post mortem examination carried out today at Mullingar General Hospital revealed the woman, 37, died as a result of asphyxiation.
A garda spokesman said: “The deceased woman is described as 37-years-old, 5ft 3ins, shoulder length black hair, wearing a black track suit with two white stripes along the legs and sleeves, she was carrying a large black shoulder bag.
“The crime scene remains sealed off for technical examination and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.
The dead woman’s name has not been released at the request of her family, but it is understood she was from the area and a mother of two young children.
Gardaí are appealing for anybody in the St Mel’s Road/Templemichael Terrace area of the town who may have seen anything unusual yesterday to contact them.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 28-year-old man was still being questioned by officers tonight after the discovery of a body in Co Tipperary, gardaí said.
A murder investigation was launched this morning after the remains of a 45-year-old man were found in a house at Carrigeen, Clonmel, shortly after 2.30am.
The scene was preserved for a full forensic examination.
The arrested man was being questioned at Clonmel Garda Station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.
