An electronic cable firm has announced plans to close its manufacturing facility in Castlebar, Co Mayo and laid off 170 workers.

Volex, which has been operating in the town for 15 years, blamed the slowdown in the global telecommunications industry and increasing labour and production costs for the lay-offs.

The workers were told earlier today that their jobs will be gone by the end of this year.

However, the company is planning to retain the 70 staff employed at its European headquarters in Castlebar.
