Paramilitary police reinforced checkpoints in Naples today after the mob war that has plagued the southern Italian city claimed four more victims.
Three bodies were found handcuffed in a suburb last night, said Carabinieri official Angelo Mazzagatti. He said the three were thought to have ties to the Di Lauro clan, a part of Naples’ Camorra crime syndicate that has been involved in a bloody battle with a breakaway group in recent months, resulting in several brutal killings.
Earlier, a 63-year-old man, father of one of the members of the breakaway group, was gunned down in a shop, Mazzagatti said.
More than 130 people were killed in the Naples region last year, most of them in mob violence that exploded in November and has spilled over into 2005. Police have carried out scores of arrests in the area.
