A federal court in Australia has overturned an earlier ruling that Prime Minister John Howard acted illegally by refusing entry to 434 Afghan asylum seekers who were rescued from a sinking ship off Indonesia.

The three-judge panel overruled a previous order by a single judge that the refugees should immediately be allowed to land on Australian soil.

The Afghans are currently on board an Australian navy ship en route to the Pacific island of Nauru, which has agreed to process their asylum applications.
