Labour annual conference votes to replace property tax

Delegates at the Labour Party's annual conference have voted to replace the property tax with a site value tax.

They have also adopted motions which would mean households depending on social welfare would not be expected to pay.

Delegates also voted in favour of recognising Travellers as an ethnic minority, and to allow adopted people to trace the identity of their birth parents.

The Tánaiste is expected to deliver a speech later tonight that will try and convince rank and file Labour supporters that he is prepared to fight for Labour in next year's elections.

Meanwhile SIPTU boss Jack O'Connor will address the party and concerns about them being in Government with a party on the right.

He is expected to say that until Labour is the biggest party in a Government, the party must be prepared to go into coalition with Centre Right parties to defend the interests of working people.
