Soccer: Eriksson pleads for peace in Munich

Sven-Goran Eriksson has pleaded for peace when England take on Germany in their crunch World Cup qualifier in Munich on September 1.

Sven-Goran Eriksson has pleaded for peace when England take on Germany in their crunch World Cup qualifier in Munich on September 1.

The meeting between the two European heavyweights in Charleroi during Euro 2000 was marred by violence in the streets outside the ground both before and after England's 1-0 win.

And Eriksson is warning fans and players not to become wrapped up in the occasion and ensure the atmosphere does not spill over.

"I know it's an historic match between two big footballing countries but I hope there will be no declaration of war," said the Swede.

"For 90 minutes the two sides will be enemies but I hope there will be no problems with the fans.

"It must be a dream for every player - and for the managers - to be involved in such a game.

"If we are to win the group we have to win the game. But we should not do anything differently from what we have done before - apart from the Holland game of course," he said.
