Medical records found in Galway bog

Medical records belonging to patients of Sligo General Hospital have been found in a bog in Galway.

Medical records belonging to patients of Sligo General Hospital have been found in a bog in Galway.

They were discovered in a black bin bag by community wardens yesterday.

The HSE has been notified and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner has confirmed that it has launched an investigation.

It follows similar discoveries in Mayo and Roscommon earlier this month.

Galway County Councillor Peter Roche, who lives near the bog in Abbeyknockmoy, told Galway Bay FM that he suspects there's something "sinister" at play.

"It was hospital-related waste and (you) could actually see some of the names and addresses of patients," he said.

"I have an awful suspicion that this rubbish was planted there to be found - to further destroy the reputation of the HSE."
