An armed man opened fire on gardaí today after barricading himself into his home in Gort, Co Galway.

An armed man opened fire on gardaí today after barricading himself into his home in Gort, Co Galway.

The man, in his 40s, locked himself in the house at around 11.30pm last night.

A number of shots were fired and two garda cars were damaged.

No-one was injured in the incident.

A spokeswoman for the garda press office said a trained negotiating team was on site and attempting to make contact with the man.

She added that officers would be continuing to monitor the situation closely.
