Premiership: Anderton agrees four-year deal

Darren Anderton is aiming to be fit for the new season after signing a new four-year contract with Tottenham.

The England midfielder, who joined Spurs from Portsmouth for £1.75m in 1992, was out of contract this summer and manager Glenn Hoddle was keen for him to stay.

And following weeks of negotiations, Anderton has finally put pen to paper on the new deal.

Hoddle doubts that Anderton will be match-fit in time for the new season after his Achilles operation but the midfielder himself was more optimistic last week.

He said on his website: "With an Achilles tendon injury, you can never say you'll be fit in a definite period of time because any little setback can put you back another four-six weeks.

"I would think that Glenn's not counting his chickens, but I hope to be fit for pre-season training.

"When I'm fit Glenn says he would like me to play in a more central role and I was very happy to hear that. It's something I want to do. I'd rather play in the middle because you're more involved.

"If you're stood out on the right wing you might not see the ball for 10-15 minutes - and that can be frustrating.

"There's going to be a lot competition for places in midfield next season - but that's a good thing for the club.

"It's exactly what we need if we're going to have a successful campaign. If all goes well I'll still be here to stake my claim for a place in the team."
