Primary school teachers are backing a European plan which could see PE lessons being made compulsory for all children.

Primary school teachers are backing a European plan which could see PE lessons being made compulsory for all children.

MEPs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of proposals that would require primary schools to provide at least three PE lessons every week.

The Irish National Teachers' Organisation says it supports the move as research shows that Irish pupils spend less time on PE than their European counterparts.

However, it says PE facilities will have to be significantly improved in Ireland if the measure is to be implemented.
