The body responsible for dealing with school truancy is seeking extra funding in next month's budget.
The National Educational Welfare Board said an extra €6m was needed to help it tackle a situation whereby more than 80,000 children currently miss at least a month of classes every year.
It said a lack of funding at present was curtailing the board's ability to provide a meaningful service.
