An 84-year-old woman was pushed to her death from a Los Angeles commuter train platform and another woman was arrested, US authorities said today.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Captain Mike Parker said Betty Sugiyama was on a Metro Gold Line platform when she was pushed on to the empty tracks. She was injured in the fall and died in hospital.

Capt Parker said 44-year-old Jackkqueline Pogue was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remained in custody on $1m (€735,000) bail. Authorities said they would seek a murder charge now that the victim has died.

Investigators said the attack appeared to be unprovoked, and there was no immediate indication as to a motive.
