Man allows wife’s rape over unpaid gambling debt

Police said today they were looking for a man who allegedly allowed two neighbours to rape his new wife instead of paying a 3,000 takas (€54) gambling debt.

The two had been united in an arranged marriage barely two weeks when the man took his 20-year-old wife out on Tuesday on the pretext of visiting an ailing friend in Alalerchar, a remote village in northern Rangpur district, a police officer said.

Instead, the husband left his wife with the two men who were waiting in a field, the officer said.

She was found by villagers the next day with her hands and legs tied and mouth taped. Doctors confirmed she had been raped, the officer said.

Police arrested one of the suspects who told them the man offered his wife instead of money he owed them. Police are searching for the husband and the second suspect.

Rape is punishable by life imprisonment in Bangladesh. The husband could be jailed for up to 10 years for allegedly abetting the crime.

All three are farm workers in Alalerchar, nearly 155 miles north of the capital, Dhaka.
