John Major will not be holding a press conference to "discuss personal matters".

The former British Prime Minister was expected to conduct a news conference after a charity lecture in the US.

His spokesman in Dallas, Texas, said he never planned to answer questions on the Currie affair.

A spokesman said: "This has not, and never has been, the case."

But the said: "Mr Major is in the United States and has learned that the British media are reporting that he plans to hold a press conference in Dallas to discuss personal matters.

"This is not, and never has been, the case.

"Mr Major issued a statement last week and does not propose to add to it.

"Mr Major will be arriving in Dallas in time to speak at the charity dinner but will not be making any personal statement."
