The Catholic Church has announced plans to close the seminary at St Patrick’s College in Thurles, Co Tipperary, due to the declining number of student priests.

The students currently enrolled will be transferred to Maynooth and the college will continue to operate as a third-level institute of theological and philosophical studies.

Around 1,500 students have passed through St Patrick’s since its foundation in 1837.

The closure means that Maynooth is now the Catholic Church’s only seminary in Ireland.
