SF holds first official meeting with Orde

The Sinn Féin leadership held its first official meeting today with the chief constable of the PSNI.

The Sinn Féin leadership held its first official meeting today with the chief constable of the PSNI.

Gerry Adams and Hugh Orde met at Stormont this morning as part of moves to get republicans to endorse the PSNI before Assembly elections scheduled for next March.

Sinn Féin says it will arrange an ard fheis to decide on the matter once it receives a timetable for the devolution of policing and justice powers from London.

It also wants agreement on the make-up of a policing and justice ministry at Stormont, as well a commitment that British spy agency MI5 will not be involved in civic policing in the North.

Speaking after today's meeting, both sides said it was a useful encounter, but Mr Adams said a lot of work still had to be done before republicans would be happy to endorse the police service.
