Gunfire was reported in the West Bank Jewish settlement of Itamar, near the Palestinian city of Nablus, tonight, settlers said. Israel TV said two people were seriously wounded.

Israeli Police spokeswoman Ganit Wingrad said shots had been heard inside the settlement, but she could give no further details.

Israel TV said it was apparently an incursion by one or more armed Palestinians, who were holed up in a house in the settlement.

The settlement, where some of the most militant Israeli settlers in the West Bank live, is not fenced in. Settlers insist the whole West Bank belongs to the Jews.

On May 29, a Palestinian gunman attacked a high school at the settlement, killing three Israeli teenagers.
