A woman in her forties and her young daughter have been killed in a house fire in Co Wexford.

The blaze broke out shortly before 2 o'clock this morning.

Gardaí were called to the scene of the fire at Woodview Drive, Adamstown in Enniscorthy early this morning by a neighbour who received minor injuries in his attempts to rescue the victims.

It's understood the woman's husband, who was out when the blaze started, also suffered smoke inhalation when he tried to gain entry to the house after he returned home.

The man's son escaped by jumping through a back window.

The bodies of the mother, aged 42, and her seven year old daughter remain at the scene this morning, where a full technical examination is due to be carried out.

Gardai from Carrickbyrne and New Ross Garda Stations are investigating the cause of the fire.
