Dungarvan's Fraher Field was the scene of jubilant celebrations this afternoon as Waterford's senior footballers claimed their first championship win in 19 years.

Paidi O'Se's Clare side were shocked into submission as the Deise deservedly won this Munster SFC tie to notch their first championship victory since 1988.

Waterford's losing sequence was the longest ever in Munster championship history, but the monkey is now finally off their backs.

Clare were 0-4 to 0-3 to the good at half-time, after they made a solid start with points from Evan Talty, Rory Donnelly, Stephen Hickey and David Russell inside the opening eight minutes.

Had Hickey kepy his seventh-minute penalty shot under the bar, the Banner would have been further ahead. After Andy Hubbard floated over a '45' to open the home side's account, a scrappy spell ensued with neither side able to find the target.

Waterford captain Brian Wall managed to break that duck with two late frees, nudging his side to within a single point of the match favourites.

Wall kicked his third point, soon after the restart, but Clare nosed their way back in front with points from Donnelly and Russell.

Waterford then came with another burst, during which Liam O'Lionnain saw his deflected shot clear the crossbar and Ger Power's rifled 59th-minute shot managed to find the Clare net.

That goal and a quick fisted point from Power sent Waterford ahead and they doggedly held onto the lead in the closing stages. Indeed, they would have had another goal but for the brilliant shot-stopping of Clare's Joe Hayes. Laurence Healy put his name to Clare's seventh point of the day but there was no comeback from the visitors whose manager O'Se will now come under intense scrutiny after this deflating loss.

For John Kiely's Waterford side, they can look forward to taking on the might of All-Ireland champions Kerry in an intriguing Munster semi-final in a fortnight's time.
