The plane was flying to Launceston from Melbourne when a fight broke out and the two attendants were stabbed, the report said. Two passengers may also have been injured.

The plane turned back and landed at Melbourne, where police and emergency services rushed to the scene.

The flight attendants – a man in his late 30s and a woman in her 20s – were taken to a nearby hospital.

They are in a stable condition with facial injuries, according to reports.

Two passengers with minor injuries were also treated by paramedics at the scene.

One man was in custody and was being interviewed, a police spokesman said.
