Kubica’s manager keeps options open

Robert Kubica’s manager has not ruled out the prospect of the Pole making a competitive return to Formula One this season.

Robert Kubica’s manager has not ruled out the prospect of the Pole making a competitive return to Formula One this season.

Daniele Morelli has admitted to being dismayed by the remarks just a week ago from Renault owner Gerard Lopez who suggested a return “was not possible this year”, other than perhaps a Friday practice session.

The Pole is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation following a rallying accident in early February that left him in hospital for two-and-a-half months, requiring four operations.

Speaking in the paddock yesterday at the Monaco Grand Prix, Morelli said: “I think you have to ask Lopez why he made such a statement that is in clear opposition to what the specialists are saying.

“All the doctors are not writing off Robert for this season, so I think Lopez’s statement is incorrect.”

Regarding the comment of nothing more than a Friday drive, Morelli added: “It’s a bit surprising that an offer to a driver like Robert is limited to a Friday session.

“When he returns he will be back for racing, with no need to judge his capability in a Friday session.

“If Robert is sufficiently fit to drive a Formula One car for one lap, he can do it for a whole weekend.”

At present, Morelli has suggested August as when a decision will be made as to whether Kubica returns this season.

“A month ago Robert left the hospital and since then there has been an important improvement of his general condition,” added Morelli.

“He’s working a lot, five hours a day of rehabilitation of the leg and of his arm, with no complications at this stage.

“Robert is strong and young and this can make a recovery quicker than expected.”

The main issue surrounds Kubica’s severely-damaged right hand, with Morelli confirming progress is being made.

“There is an increase in the movement of his hand. He can grab things now, although what is missing is strength.

“After so many months lying in a bed and with a blocked arm, the muscles are very weak, but this is not a concern because he just needs to do training.

“Of course, you cannot really forecast and predict what will be the final functionality.”

As a Monaco resident, Kubica had considered visiting the paddock over the weekend, however Morelli felt it wise he stayed away for the time being.

“He didn’t want to come and be submerged by people,” said Morelli.

“It has not been easy for me, so you can imagine what it would have been like for Robert stepping in.

“So the situation is he will come back wearing his overalls.”
