9% increase in number of elders reporting abuse

The number of elderly people reporting abuse to the HSE's dedicated elder abuse helpline is on the rise.

The number of elderly people reporting abuse to the HSE's dedicated elder abuse helpline is on the rise.

Last year, the service received more than 2,300 referrals of alleged abuse, an increase of 9% on 2010 and the single largest annual increase since the service commenced in 2007.

Some 81% of cases of alleged abuse occurred within the victim's home.

A total of just over 9,000 alleged elder abuse cases have been received by the HSE service since it commenced five years ago.
