Israeli soldiers have killed two Palestinians they claimed were trying to plant a bomb by a roadside in the West Bank.

The shootings near Jenin sparked a dawn gun battle between Palestinian militants and Israeli troops, but there are no reports of further injuries.

The Israeli army said the men they killed were planning to set off a roadside bomb as Jewish settlers passed by later in the day.

Elsewhere in the Weste Bank, an Israeli motorist was wounded last night when Palestinian gunmen opened fire on his car.

The Israeli army also said shots were fired from a Palestinian village of Sheikh Shiban towards an Israeli bakery truck driven by a 26-year-old Israeli Arab.

The latest violence follows a meeting between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres in a bid to calm tensions and reinforce a tentative ceasefire that has had little effect on the ground.
