Mr Justice Feargus Flood, who had many a battle with Liam Lawlor during his appearances at Dublin Castle, has joined in sending his condolences to the family of the controversial former TD.

The former High Court Judge told RTE’s This Week programme: “The death of anyone who you know is a very sad event. I would like to convey my condolences to his family who must be in a deep sense of shock.”

Mr Justice Flood who famously asked Mr Lawlor : "When did you start forgetting?" faced an uphill battle with the TD to get information about his bank accounts and financial dealings.

He became so frustrated with Mr Lawlor’s non-compliance with the planning tribunal that he once said: "With all respect I don't intend to sit here any longer.”

Speaking yesterday Mr Flood, who is now the chairman of the Centre for Public Inquiry, described his colourful adversary as “a larger than life character. He had his own agenda and I am not too certain that my agenda and his were on the same track. I think that’s probably the reality of that.”

Asked whether Mr Lawlor could have gone further in politics to take a Cabinet position with Fianna Fáil, he said: “I think that’s within the bounds of possibility but unfortunately he chose a different course.”
