The Northern Alliance has said that UN peacekeepers will not be needed in Afghanistan because the Taliban, which is on the verge of collapse, is the only obstacle to peace.

Dr Abdullah Abdullah, the Alliance’s Foreign Minister, said the UN as an organisation can observe elections and help rebuild the country, but he ruled out any role for UN soldiers in the future of Afghanistan.

"The obstacle to achieving peace is of course the Taliban and the terrorists," he said.

"After getting rid of the Taliban and the terrorists, there won’t be war and won’t be a need for international peacekeeping forces."
