An emergency medical technician was recovering in a Cork hospital today after he was stabbed.

An emergency medical technician was recovering in a Cork hospital today after he was stabbed.

The man was attacked when he disturbed two men trying to steal a car outside Youghal Community Hospital at Cork Hill shortly after midnight.

The man, in his 20s, who was part of the ambulance crew based at Youghal, was taken to Cork University Hospital with the knife still embedded in his stomach.

His condition is described as stable.

Gardaí confirmed the two men escaped from the scene on foot.

Forensic technicians were informed, for a technical examination of the area to take place.
