Bruce Springsteen has scrapped his annual Halloween party - because his neighbours might be too spooked out by the ghostly goings-on.

The singer and his wife, Patti Scialfa, usually throw a party for family and friends on October 31 at their home in Rumson, New Jersey.

But the couple has cancelled this year's bash amid fears too many people will attend and pose a threat to local children.

Writing on his website, Springsteen said: "So as not to inconvenience you this Halloween, due to 'catastrophic success' (read: too many visitors for the neighborhood to handle) and concern for the safety of kids and parents, we won't be having our usual Halloween display this year in Rumson.

"We wish everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!"
