Cabinet approves publication of mortgage-arrears report

The Cabinet has approved the publication of a report into mortgage arrears.

The Cabinet has approved the publication of a report into mortgage arrears.

It is understood the Keane report does not recommend any mass debt forgiveness scheme.

Instead, it makes recommendations such as freezing portions of mortgages, and allowing people to rent back homes after they have been reposessed.

The report is to be published by the Department of Finance tomorrow after being discussed at Cabinet today.

Groups helping people with their mortgage arrears do not believe new proposals to assist homeowners go far enough.

The Free Legal Advice Centre is seeking the introduction of new personal insolvency legislation in addition to the mortgage proposals.
