Brendan Howlin has ruled himself out of the race to be the next leader of the Labour Party.

The Wexford TD was regarded as one of the favourites to replace Pat Rabbitte and has already contested two leadership votes within the party.

However, he revealed today that he had decided not to stand again in order to focus on issues within his constituency, as well as his role as Leas Ceann Comhairle in the Dail.

Deputy Howlin says that, despite his lifetime ambition to lead the Labour Party, he is content with his decision not to seek the job this time around.

He says he has plans in his own constituency and doesn't want to be out of Wexford any more than he needs to be.
