Archer is serving four years in jail after being found guilty by an Old Bailey jury of perjury at his 1987 libel trial.

Papers in his case were reportedly lodged at the Court of Appeal in London today, a day before the 28-day deadline for loding an appeal.

Archer had denied lying to the court during his libel trial, which netted him £500,000 in damages from the Daily Star.

The newspaper had published allegations that Archer slept with a prostitute.
