Fianna Fáil to publish bill in bid to regulate debt collecting sector

There has been calls to regulate the debt collecting sector here.

Fianna Fáil will today publish a bill to crack down on criminal practices by rogue debt collectors.

Proposals include the establishment of an open register of debt collectors, a code of conduct for all operators and a ban on people with violent criminal convictions.

Spokesperson on Justice and Equality, Niall Collins, said that ordinary debtors need to be offered some legal protection.

"It is well known and widely known that some high profile figures, criminal figures, are now involved in the debt collection business," he said.

"We need to have it regulated, we need to have it overseen by statutory footing and the state has to have an active role in the monitoring of debt collection agencies."
