Ten people were arrested after a huge brawl between rival traveller families broke out in Galway city last night.

Ten people were arrested after a huge brawl between rival traveller families broke out in Galway city last night.

Gardai from four counties were called to the scene.

Up to 60 travellers using slash hooks, iron bars and baseball bats were involved in the fight, which took place on a football pitch in the Castlepark estate on the eastern side of the city.

Gardai were forced to drive patrol cars onto the pitch to keep the two sides apart.

The 10 men who were arrested are expected to appear in court in the city later today.
