A British producer jailed for staging a play about a gay businessman has been freed on bail in Uganda.

David Cecil, who spent the weekend in a prison near the capital Kampala, was ordered to surrender his passport.

He is accused of disobeying the orders of the Uganda Media Council when he staged “The River and the Mountain” in Kampala theatres last month.

Mr Cecil will return to court on October 18 and faces two years in jail if convicted.

The play’s main character is a young Ugandan businessman who loses friends and then is murdered after revealing that he is gay.
