The authorities in Mexico have evacuated three villages in the western states of Jalisco and Colima after the nearby Volcano of Fire rumbled into life in recent days.

The volcano began spewing smoke and ash this week and a dome of partially cooled lava has built up at its crater.

Vulcanologists said the dome could either collapse, sending hot rocks tumbling down the volcano’s flanks, or explode, launching rocks and ash into the surrounding areas.

Around 300,000 people live within 25 miles of the Volcano of Fire, which last erupted in 1999.
