A new study has reportedly found that more than a quarter of prisoners released from Irish jails find themselves back behind bars within a year.

The study of prisoner re-offending rates was carried out by experts at UCD and analysed almost 20,000 inmates released over a four-year period.

Reports this morning say more than a quarter of these inmates were back in prison within a year and half were re-incarcerated within four years.

The vast majority of re-offenders were reportedly found to be male, single, unemployed and under the age of 30.

More than half of those involved in the study spent less than three months in prison, while the rate of re-offending was found to be particularly high (85%) among people who had served time for not paying fines.
