The ISPCC has described the huge rise in calls to its Childline service as alarming.

Calls to the telephone advice line have increased by 72%.

Almost 87,000 calls were made in 2003 but the organisation has said it was only possible to deal with a fifth of those calls.

Chief executive of the ISPCC Paul Gilligan says it very worrying.

"If you look at the call statistics this year and last year we did answer more calls this year but more calls were made to the service," he said.

"The reality is that as technology develops the more children have access to mobile phones the more we are likely to get calls. We are committed to answering all calls, it is going to take massive commitment and investment but we do remain hopeful."
