The European Parliament today postponed its vote on the ratification of Turkey’s customs union with the European Union following opposition from conservative politicians.

The Parliament voted 311-285 to postpone the vote because of Ankara’s refusal to recognise Cyprus.

Sixty-five MEPs abstained. The delay of the vote will have no effect on the starting date for Turkey’s accession negotiations with the EU, scheduled for October 3.
