Motorcycling: Rossi secures new title

New world champion Valentino Rossi secured his 10th MotoGP victory of the season at Sepang in Malaysia just one week after winning the 500cc world championship.

And fellow Italian Loris Capirossi has a real chance of finishing second in the championship after taking second on the West Honda.

He is just four points behind second-placed Max Biaggi who crashed out on the Marlboro Yamaha after a collision with the Telefonica Movistar Suzuki of American Kenny Roberts.

Rossi was at his brilliant best on the Nastro Azzurro Honda in the hot humid conditions round the 5.548km Sepang circuit and took victory by 3.551 seconds over Capirossi with Australian Red Bull Yamaha rider Garry McCoy in third place.

‘‘It was hard out there towards the finish of the race because of the heat and when the tyres were going off,’’ explained Rossi.

‘‘I may have won the championship last week but we got focused on Saturday during qualifying and then set up to win the race. I really enjoyed it, especially racing with Garry and his sliding style.’’
