A pilot was seriously injured after his light aircraft crashed into electricity lines tonight, UK police said tonight.

A pilot was seriously injured after his light aircraft crashed into electricity lines tonight, UK police said tonight.

Engineers are believed to have discovered the Cessna single-engined aircraft when they went to investigate downed lines.

They found the pilot in his aircraft at Hannington near Basingstoke, Hampshire at 7pm.

The crash site is near a BBC transmitter.

A Hampshire Police spokeswoman said the pilot, who was the only person in the plane, has been taken to the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke with serious injuries.

She said the aircraft has been en-route from Blackpool to Popham airfield in Hampshire which is only eight miles from the crash site.

Air accident investigators were on their way to the scene, she added.
