Sinn Fein has said it is not sorry to see Peter Mandelson's resignation as Northern Secretary.

The party said that it was a matter of record that it had frequently been in dispute with Mr Mandelson and he had often been an "impediment to progress".

The UUP said that while it was a sad day for Mr Mandelson personally, the peace process would have to go on and that there were a number of serious issues to be tackled.

The DUP said few tears would be shed at Mr Mandelson's departure and that it hoped his successor would not be so quick to placate republicans and nationalists.
