Minister for the Environment John Gormley has announced a €6bn investment programme aimed at updating and preserving Ireland's water supplies.

The money will be spent on building new water supply and waste water infrastructure over the next two years.

Conservation and anti-pollution measures will also be incorporated to protect and preserve drinking water, as well as rivers, lakes and estuaries.

The move follows the recent water crisis in Galway, where 90,000 people had no drinking water supply due to contamination by the cryptosporidium parasite.
