Minister for Justice, John O'Donoghue, said today he “learned with great sadness and shock of the death of a member of the Garda Siochana who so tragically lost his life in the performance of his duties early today”.

The garda is the 32nd officer to be killed in the line of duty since the foundation of the state. It is the first killing since Sergeant Andy Callanan was killed by an arsonist in Tallaght Garda Station in 1999.

Fine Gael spokesperson Billy Timmins has condemned the shooting of the guard in Co Laois today. Mr Timmins has extended his sympathy to the family of the garda. He says it is one of the many difficulties our force faces.

President Mary McAleese has also expressed her sincere condolences to the family of the murdered garda. Mrs McAleese has been in contact with Garda Commissioner, Pat Byrne, regarding the tragic shooting in Abbeyleix.

Labour Party deputy leader Brendan Howlin says it is a sad evening not just for the gardai but for the country as a whole. Mr Howlin condemned the killing and said “the shooting is a reminder to us all the risks society expect the gardai to take day-in, day-out to protect society”. He also extended his deepest sympathy to the family and colleague of the dead garda.
