An affluent New Delhi suburb turned into a battleground as women with truncheons and men with stones attacked police today, a day after violent clashes erupted between protesting Honda workers and police.

Live television footage showed furious women chasing police officers and pounding them with canes as hundreds swarmed in the streets near a government hospital in Gurgaon, a suburb where some 700 people were reported to have been injured in a police swoop yesterday against violent Honda protestors.

Many people were relatives of those who were still missing after the police violence. Men with stones surrounded a hospital where many of the injured were being held.

The hospitals could not cope with the crush and most patients complained of getting no help or medical aid from authorities.

Police also attacked cameramen from several news channels which had shown live coverage of the police assault that left hundreds bleeding. About 1,000 angry Honda workers had protested the dismissal of four colleagues.
