The Labour Party is gathering in Wexford today for the starts of its annual delegate conference.

Up to 1,000 party members are expected to attend the weekend gathering.

They will be assessing the party's disappointing General Election result, as well as laying the ground work for the local and European elections in 2009.

One of the issues up for discussion is the establishment of a commission to explore Labour's role in 21st Century Ireland.

New leader Eamon Gilmore will not be attending until tomorrow as his mother is being buried in Caltra, Co Galway, this morning.
