Waterlogged Newcastle abandoned

Officials at Newcastle have abandoned the meeting scheduled for Wednesday due to waterlogging.

With the ground already heavy, an inspection had been called for 8am.

Following 22 millimetres of rain in the last 48 hours and 32mm in the last week, clerk of the course James Armstrong said: “There’s water lying all over the place, and in places I’ve never seen it.

“It’s a worry how high the water table must be to react to what is not really a ridiculous amount of rain. Sadly, it was an easy call to make.”
