Legendary presenter Tonny Gubba passes away

Tony Gubba has died.

The commentator passed away today after a short illness aged 69, his family have confirmed.

He will be remembered for his work as a BBC sportscaster, and more recently as the voice of ITV series 'Dancing On Ice', which he had worked on since its launch in 2006.

Tony is survived by his partner of 15 years, Jenny, his two daughters, Claire, 40 and Libby, 38 and three granddaughters.

Tony had been the Daily Mirror newspaper's north of England correspondent before joining BBC Sport in 1972. There he worked on programmes including 'Sportsnight', 'Grandstand' and 'Match of the Day', and commented on wide range of sports including hockey, table-tennis, golf, tennis, bobsleigh, ski-jumping, darts and ice-skating.

He also covered every Olympic Games, both summer and winter, from 1972 to 2012, as well as every World Cup from 1974 to 2006.

Tributes have flooded in, with 'Dancing on Ice' presenter Philip Schofield tweeting: "It's with the saddest of hearts that I tweet the news that our dear friend Tony Gubba has passed away. We were all aware how poorly he was (sic)."

Manish Bhasin, presenter of the BBC's 'Football League Show' wrote: "So sad to hear that Tony Gubba has passed away. An iconic voice from my childhood & someone I had the pleasure of working with

"Thoughts with his family."
